Eco-Green-Nutters?

Meet Inge and Rolf.  We used to be the eco-green-nutters in the basin (the Kororipo Basin in Kerikeri), and all of a sudden we are among the leaders of the newly appreciated green eco life style. This is rather nice.

Leaders in New Zealand Luxury Health and Wellness Centres

Visiting our Eco Spa Resort – (NZ leaders in eco health and wellness centres, and members of Northland Sustainable Tourism Charter) you can experience what a very low carbon footprint feels like in a subtropical pampering resort. This is a luxurious break, not roughing it!

Our Eco Spa Resort combines luxurious accommodation in private villas, organic gourmet food in Makai Restaurant and re-juvenating spa and massage treatments in Maora Wellness Centre - all coupled with exceptional friendly service to our guests as well as nature and environment!

Rainwater Harvesting and Processing

The rainwater is collected through gutter guards and filtered with a HomeSpring* filter. Our tap water tastes wonderful provides the best skin treatment and is very beneficial for cleansing and digestion! After use the water is cleaned by our waste water treatment plant and thus fed into irrigation lines for the veggie garden and orchard.

Organic Gourmet Paradise

The organic food from our own garden and farmers close by are offered as gourmet health food, supplemented by organic wines, teas and juices. The kitchen scraps go into the compost alley (20 bins) and two worm farms. The local Northtec uses ORA ORA RESORT as an example for "Permaculture"

Meditation

The mediation path around the garden (one round 1000 steps) leads directly to the Rainbow Falls Walk along the Kerikeri River.  A special meditation path (108 steps) surrounds the fish pond in the Ora Garden of Wellbeing. We also offer meditation classes, Feng Shui and astrology consultations. Our Crater Garden is great for meditation!

Wellness

Our New Zealand Luxury Health and Wellness Centre offers treatments to improve lymphatic action, to relax, and to take away pains: energetic healing, massages, hot stones, sauna, herbal baths, facials, Kneipp treatments and others.

Biodynamic Principles

Our Spa Resort breathes peace - you will feel it. The land has been cared for according to Rudolf Steiner's biodynamic principles with the preparations and with the help of a paramagnetic tower. The certified soil improvement is remarkable:  54% increase in Potassium after 5 years of caring.

Luxury with Strict Rules

The accommodation is quite luxurious and comfortable. Heat pumps provide you with warming or cooling as desired.

But there are also strict rules: recycle waste (no mixing), use of eco friendly shampoos, detergents, etc. and no smoking inside the buildings. Our switch-off policy helps to reduce energy consumption and thus the carbon footprint.

Joy and Zest in Life - Good for Seminars Too!

Our New Zealand Health and Wellness Centre is great for seminars. Participants feel the joy of creativity, concentration, and connection. The personal attention which Inge and Rolf offer to all their guests is exceptional. It is a place where you feel treasured !

Taste Explosions at Makai Restaurant

"Makai" means "pure food" in Maori language.  All our food and drinks are organic and you can taste the difference.  Imagine you had a grandma in the countryside who produced all her own food. You might recognize the similarity here. The fresh salads are just exploding with taste!

Tiny Carbon Foot Print

Some of the food offered ar from our own organic garden.  Locating growers of organic food as close by as possible has become our hobby.  This includes organic wines, beers, spirits, juices, coffees and teas.  New Zealand's resources are fantastic and enable a very small carbon footprint and low (food miles).

Watergarden Restaurant

Permaculture

Many of the salads, herbs, fruits, nuts and vegetables are organically grown in our own permaculture gardens, so there are only a couple of minutes between harvesting and serving them to you!  You are most welcome to sample the crop!

Menu

Our varied menu includes a starter, mains and desert of the day, which will always be the freshest from the garden and the surrounding farms.  You will realise that "organic" does not mean vegetarian, but of course vegetarean and vegan dishes are available, and special diets can be followed worrifree!

Organic Beverages

Our wine cellar is stocked with excellent whites, reds and roses (Tiritiri, Sunset Valley, Millton, Richmond Plains), as well as beers (Founders, Green Fern), sparkling wine (Wrights), spirits and liqueurs (Deinlein) - all organic of course.  We know all those vineyards and breweries personally!   Matching local organic cheeses (Mahoe) and nuts make it a wonderful tasting experience!

Enjoy an adventurous Keri Keri Tea range and invigorating coffee (see list). We will be glad to prepare seasonal fresh vegetable or fruit juices for you.

Diets

One of our specialties is observing dietary restrictions while still creating lucullic meals.  We will gladly provide you with vegan, vegetarian, carnivorous or even a fattening-up meals. Juice fasting, Dr. Bruker raw food salads, Atkins and Weight Watcher options are available.

Seminars

For conferences and seminars we provide a menu suggestion in accordance with your budget.

Atmosphere

Overlooking a little pond with ferns and palms in a subtropical setting, our Makai Restaurant faces west, so that you can enjoy graphic romantic sunsets.  The venue is also popular for occasional concerts, theatre performances, and lectures.

Our Location

ORA ORA RESORT is nestled in the historic and nature reserve of Kerikeri at the tip of the Inlet, directly opposite the little yacht harbour and New Zealand's oldest buildings (the Stone Store 1836 and Kerikeri Mission House 1822).

Bay of Islands, New ZealandKerikeri is an important place in this popular holiday area Bay of Islands. There are about 5 daily 40-minutes-flights from Auckland to the regional airport of Northland, which is 10 minutes by car from ORAORA RESORT.

By car, the scenic 270-km journey from Auckland to Kerikeri will take you about 3 1/2 hours of easy driving and sightseeing. Comfortable public buses run daily from Auckland city and airport, taking about 4 hours.
Kerikeri village is about 2 km from ORA ORA RESORT, which is close to all amenities, yet away from the hustle and bustle. Touristy Paihia and Russell are reached by car in about 30 minutes.

Kerikeri is the ideal location for exploring the numerous attractions of the Bay of Islands as well as the other northern bays and the most northern tip Cap Reinga (see Our Activities).

How to Find Us
By car: Drive north from Auckland on State Highway 1 through Kawakawa and Moerewa. Turn into State Highway 10 up to the right hand turn to Kerikeri. Pass through downtown Kerikeri and on to the Stone Store. Cross the one-lane bridge across the Kerikeri River and find ORA ORA RESORT almost immediately afterwards uphill on your left.

If you come from the North on State High Way 10, follow the signs to Kerikeri – after the round-about you will soon see the large ORA ORA RESORT sign on your right before approaching the one-way bridge at the Stone Store.

If you fly to Bay of Islands Airport in Kerikeri, we will gladly meet you there to bring you to ORA ORA RESORT.

Climate
The Northland sea borders offer a very comfortable and pleasant sub-tropical climate. We experience just three seasons in Kerikeri:  spring, summer and autumn. However, locals call June, July and August "winter", although many plants are in flower, the vegetation is lush green and afternoon temperatures often reach 20o C / 68o F. The warm climate is ideal for growing tropical plants and fruit, and coupled with the rich volcanic soil provides the basis for the regional extensive citrus fruit industry - come to see our own little orchard!
The summer months December, January, February are appropriately hot during the day (but not too hot), without the sticky humidity of the tropics, and comfortably cool at night. Afternoon temperatures in spring and autumn are around 23o C / 73o F, a perfect condition for lots of outdoor activities. Sailing in the Bay of Islands

Our Activities

It never gets boring in the beautiful Bay of Islands, which offers more exciting activities than you can experience.

Pampering Body and Soul

MAORA Wellness Centre includes a Finnish sauna and various water treatment possibilities inspired by old Father Kneipp from Germany. In addition, a variety of body massages, reflexology, aromatherapy, homeopathy, hydrotherapy, spiritual healing, yoga, health seminars and other treatments are available.  You are really worth it!

Walking in the Vicinity

The Rainbow Waterfalls Walk is accessible through a gate from ORA ORA RESORT – allowing for an exciting and comfortable 40 minutes walk in a "Lord of the Rings"- like environment to the 26 meter Rainbow Waterfall’, whose spray provides you with an enormous benefit for your skin and energy level.

Guided walks with plenty of information about lush sub-tropical vegetation are offered by Annemarie of Living Leaves.

Rewa Fishing Village, a replica Maori historical settlement with the educational Discoverers' Garden full of native trees, bushes and plants and with explanations about their uses, is just across the road from ORA ORA RESORT.  Don’t miss the video about the area's early history!

Kerikeri Bay of Islands Stone Store Basin

Across the river stop by the Mission House (1822) and the Stone Store (1836), New Zealand's oldest European buildings, operated by the Historic Places Trust as a museum, and climb up to the Kororipo Pa Site, a couple of minutes further across the road, which provides historical information about this fortified Maori settlement and a magnificent view.  This area is considered The Cradle of the Nation for the initial contact between Maoris and Missionaries.

A forested path leads to Kerikeri village, which may attract your interest with numerous attractive shops and restaurants and a few art galleries.

Giant Kauri at Puketi Forest

Nearby Aroha Island is a precious little kiwi sanctuary with various day activities.  At night, a guide may lead you through the bush until you spot one of the shy Brown Kiwis living in the protected nature reserve.  Their ecological centre features an interesting video about the Kiwis' behaviour and habitat and other related information.

At Puketi Forest, you may wander among the amazingly huge Kauri trees, some of which are 2000 years old.  Perfectly arranged wooden pathways allow for easy walking while protecting the Kauri trees' sensitive roots. Ian offers to guide you on short or long walks with plenty of explanations.

Exploring the Kerikeri Inlet and the Bay of Islands

Alan's old fashioned and almost silent steamship "S.S. Eliza Hobson" allows you to get close to the mangroves on the banks of the Kerikeri Inlet with plenty of bird life, Kerikeri's villas in their magnificent setting with (expensive) water views and the skipper's interesting yarn about old and new times.

The little steamer leaves from the little yacht harbour at the Stone Store opposite ORA ORA RESORT.

If steam draws your interest:  visit Collin Bros's Steam Sawmill in Kerikeri www.steam.co.nz/collins.html , where you may observe the whole milling process with creation of its own power.

S.S. Eliza Hobson

Grandma

Explore the Bay of Islands on John's 15-meter (50-foot) comfortable motor sailor "Grandma", built from New Zealand's valuable Kauri wood.  Skipper John enjoys sharing his extensive knowledge about the Bay of Islands with its 144 islands and the Northland coastline, gathered in his 30 years of sailing experience, and he will certainly take you to some beautiful beaches. If the tide is right, you can board directly at the pier of the Inlet wharf opposite the Stone Store, otherwise at the Kerikeri Yacht Club at Doves Bay.

Fullers Bay of Islands, Kings Tours, R Tucker Tompson and Dolphin Discoveries offer numerous boat tours around the Bay of Islands for you to watch the marine life, including dolphins, whales, and penguins. They start at Paihia (about 30 minutes drive from ORA ORA RESORT).

Fish your own dinner

Bay or deepsea fishing trips can easily be arranged, and our MAKAI Restaurant will gladly convert your catch into a delicious meal.

Go Golfing

The beautiful Kerikeri Golf Club, the Waitangi Golf Club near Paihia and famous Kauri Cliffs golf course near Matauri Bay are all close by, waiting for you to show your skills.  There are 13 further golf courses in Northland for the golf enthusiast - most of them very affordable!

Dare the Air

Grant and his boys will give you an air tour, providing magnificent overviews of the entire Northland up to Cape Reinga, where the Pacific meets the Tasman Sea.  The surface contours of Northland and the display of the 90-Mile-Beach, bays and islands with sharks and dolphins in clear waters are dream material!  Salt Air flights start from Bay of Islands Airport, Kerikeri, or from Paihia Airport.

Explore Vulcanic Rock Formations

Felix and Rita discovered world-unique volcanic boulder formations with "fluting" in the Hokianga and created spectacular Wairere Boulders as marvellous nature park with walkways, exciting bridges and views.

There are numerous other excursions and adventures in the "wild" Hokianga.  www.hokianga.net.nz/hokianga/

Track History

Besides the Mission House and Stone Store, the Whalers Museum at Butler's Point near Mangonui as well as the Gum Diggers Park at Waiharara and the Kauri Museum at Matakohe provide unique further insights into the early settlers' times in New Zealand, whereas Waitangi Treaty Grounds exhibits details about the historic treaty between the British Crown and the Maori in 1840. All these places are in easy driving distance.

Soak Your Bones

The geothermal Ngawha Springs offer numerous natural hot spring pools with different healing effects. Soak your bones and muscles to feel great thereafter! (About 35km from ORA ORA RESORT)

More Unlimited Choices

There are numerous other activities to choose, such as shopping, visiting varied art galleries, following the heritage trails, sampling at local vineyards, admiring the public and private sub tropical gardens, photographing the beautiful setting, property hunting, and many more.

About Us

From Big City to Eco-Permaculture Advocates

From banking and trading in mega cities straight into permaculture. This describes pretty well our last five years.

Upon our move to New Zealand we decided to create a perfect little health resort according to Kneipp principles. As a first measure we attended the Northtec Bay of Islands Campus in Kerikeri to learn about horticulture. We expected to learn just about planting and growing, but with Ken and  Kevin we encountered very inspired tutors, who live and breathe permaculture, immersed us in Bill Mollison and Rudolf Steiner principles. Our chosen town of Kerikeri has quite a lot of "these people".

Bay of Islands, New Zealand

Rolf, Inge and guest

Sustainable environmentalists

In this world unique setting of fauna and flora we quickly became fiery environmentalists and hobby researchers for all matters sustainable. We joined the Northland Sustainable Tourism Charter Project as "pioneers" and shaped ORA ORA RESORT along permaculture lines. With Feng Shui principles the place became very peaceful and the oasis of wellbeing that it is now.

Eco-Permaculture but on a Luxury Level

Rolf & Inge

With gifted and helpful friends we created and completed our New Zealand Eco Resort, where more and more healing takes place, and from where permaculture can be observed and taught. This takes place in the unusual form of a fairly luxurious resort, from where we strive to carry the message to others who have formerly not wanted to "rough it out" with permaculture as it is commonly perceived.

Living Model for Lifestyle Choices

We certainly hope that our example will inspire more people to help lessen their carbon footprint so that further generations can still enjoy this beautiful planet, because it is the only place where we can get organic chocolate and wine!

ORA ORA, Luxury Holiday Accommodation in the Bay of Islands , is a place where you feel treasured !
